Sony reported net profits of 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion) for the three months ended September, a 44 percent increase from 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) in the same period last year, according to the company's September earnings.

Sony Pictures Entertainment posted earnings of $581 million for the quarter, up 527 percent from $93 million a year earlier. The source attributes much of that gain to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which released in July and has earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, making it the third-highest grossing movie in history.

PlayStation sales of PlayStation 5 consoles fell to 2.6 million units in the second quarter, down from 4 million in the same quarter of 2025. Game sales, however, rose for both digital downloads and physical discs, the report says, despite a week-long player blackout in August that protested Sony's plan to stop selling discs entirely. Sony's exclusive Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million.

Sony CFO Lin Tao said developers are making "solid progress" on the next-generation PlayStation console and that the project is "progressing as scheduled."
